Uncommon Causes of Swollen Feet

Swollen feet can stem from various unexpected sources beyond the usual suspects like injury or fluid retention. One such cause of swelling, or edema, may be your footwear. Wearing ill-fitting shoes or high heels for prolonged periods of time can impede proper circulation, leading to swelling. A lesser-known cause could be dietary habits, particularly excessive salt intake, which can cause water retention in the body, resulting as swollen feet. Certain medications, such as antidepressants or blood pressure drugs, might also induce swollen feet as a side effect. In some cases, allergies to ingredients in skincare or cosmetic products can trigger inflammation, including in the feet. Additionally, long flights or car rides, where prolonged sitting limits movement, can result in swollen feet due to decreased blood circulation. If your feet have become swollen and remain so, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

How to Make Sure Shoes Fit Well

Ensuring your shoes fit properly is critical for comfort and foot health. Begin by measuring your feet later in the day when they are at their largest, and stand while measuring to mimic weight-bearing conditions. Take note of both length and width, including the arch length, as this affects shoe fit. Keep in mind that sizes can vary between shoe brands, so always prioritize fit over the number on the label. If your feet are different sizes, opt for the larger size to prevent discomfort. During fitting, wear the same type of socks or foot coverings you plan to wear with the shoes. Leave a thumb's width of space at the front and back of the shoes to accommodate natural foot swelling and movement. For personalized advice and to address any specific concerns, it is suggested you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can offer you invaluable guidance.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Buschke-Ollendorff Syndrome

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by the presence of skin abnormalities, typically in the form of firm, non-tender, rubbery bumps called connective tissue nevi, and bone abnormalities, such as osteopoikilosis. These can occur on the feet. It is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, meaning one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. While the skin lesions are usually asymptomatic, they can cause cosmetic concerns. Osteopoikilosis often goes unnoticed and does not typically cause symptoms. Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays. Management of Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome involves monitoring for any potential complications and addressing cosmetic concerns. Podiatrists can help by providing supportive care and addressing any foot-related issues that may arise, such as discomfort or deformities associated with osteopoikilosis. If you develop skin abnormalities affecting the feet, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and care.

Some foot conditions may require additional professional care. If you have any concerns, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Rare Foot Conditions

The majority of foot conditions are common and can be treated by a podiatrist.  Standard diagnostic procedures are generally used to identify specific conditions and treatment can be rendered. A podiatrist also treats rare foot conditions which can be difficult to diagnose and may need extra attention and care.

There are many rare foot conditions that can affect children. Some of these can include:

  • Freiberg’s disease
  • Kohler’s disease
  • Maffucci syndrome

Freiberg’s disease - This can be seen as a deterioration and flattening of a metatarsal bone that exists in the ball of the foot. It typically affects pre-teen and teenage girls, but can affect anyone at any age. Symptoms that can accompany this can be swelling, stiffness, and the patient may limp.

Kohler’s disease - This often targets the bone in the arch of the foot and affects younger boys. It can lead to an interruption of the blood supply which ultimately can lead to bone deterioration. The patient may limp or experience tenderness, swelling, and redness.

Maffucci syndrome - This affects the long bones in a child’s foot leading to the development of abnormal bone lesions. They are benign growths and typically develop in early childhood and the bones may be susceptible to breaking.

A podiatrist can properly diagnose and treat all types of rare foot conditions. If your child is affected by any of these symptoms or conditions, please don’t hesitate to call our office so the correct treatment method can begin.

Causes and Symptoms of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by repeated pressure on the posterior tibial nerve near the ankle. It can lead to debilitating symptoms such as pain, numbness, or tingling sensations, often radiating into the sole of the foot or inside the ankle. This compression occurs within the tarsal tunnel, which is a narrow passageway bound by bone and soft tissue. Tarsal tunnel syndrome's origins include severely flat feet, benign bony growths, and varicose veins. Inflammation from arthritis, lesions or masses near the tibial nerve, and trauma from ankle sprains or fractures also may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome. Patients with conditions like diabetes are at further risk. Left untreated, tarsal tunnel syndrome can cause permanent and irreversible nerve damage that may affect mobility and hinder completing daily activities. If you suspect you may be experiencing symptoms of tarsal tunnel syndrome, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

Causes and Diagnosis of Gout

Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that often targets the big toe and causes immediate and excruciating pain. Symptoms of gout include sudden swelling, pain, and redness, called flare-ups, and often occur during the night. It is caused by high levels of uric acid that form crystals in the joint. A podiatrist can conduct tests to measure uric acid levels and identify crystals in joint fluid. Treatment aims to alleviate acute flares, prevent further occurrences, and manage the condition long-term to avoid uric acid deposits in tissues. Anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids help manage pain and inflammation during flares, while preventive daily treatments may be necessary for severe cases. Lowering uric acid levels is essential for long-term management, achieved through medication, diet, and lifestyle changes. A podiatrist can offer specialized foot-related care and comprehensive assessments, custom treatment plans, and progress monitoring for effective gout management. If you are experiencing gout symptoms in the feet or ankles, it is suggested that you seek assistance from a podiatrist who can provide tailored care to alleviate discomfort and optimize management strategies.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Causes of Black Toenail

After a long walk or a vigorous run, it is not uncommon to notice a toenail that has turned black, blue, or gray, often accompanied by swelling underneath the nail. This phenomenon, known as a black toenail, is typically caused by bleeding beneath the nail, medically termed a subungual hematoma. The most common cause of black toenail is trauma, such as stubbing your toe or dropping something heavy on it. It is also common among runners as the result of repetitive pressure as the toe hits the front of the shoe. A podiatrist can offer treatment options to alleviate discomfort from black toenail and aid in the healing process. For cases where the nail is significantly raised and painful, a procedure called trephination may be recommended, which involves creating a small hole in the nail to relieve pressure and facilitate drainage. Preventing black toenails involves ensuring proper footwear and sock fit, especially during physical activity. Shoes should allow for sufficient toe room to accommodate swelling, while proper lacing techniques can minimize toe trauma. If you have developed a black toenail that is causing pain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for an exam and the appropriate treatment measures.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Causes Toe Pain?

Most severe toe pain is caused due to a sports injury, trauma from dropping something heavy on the toe, or bumping into something rigid. Other problems can develop over time for various reasons.

Toe pain can be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

  • Trauma
  • Sports injury
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight
  • Arthritis
  • Gout
  • Corns and calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Blisters
  • Ingrown toenails

Managing Heel Pain

Heel pain affects many people due to the daily strain placed on their feet. While often attributed to heel spurs, the primary culprit is usually plantar fasciitis. Neglecting the intricate network of muscles in the feet can negatively affect any existing issues or cause new ones. Engaging in foot exercises to restore muscle length and enhance overall body balance can significantly alleviate heel pain. Also, the choice of footwear plays a pivotal role in foot health. Wearing worn out or unsupportive shoes can disrupt natural foot mechanics, leading to discomfort and potential injury. Regularly inspecting footwear, especially those used for physical activity, may help to decrease the risk of heel pain. Opt for shoes that provide adequate cushioning, support, and stability that helps maintain proper foot alignment. When heel pain persists despite these measures, seeking professional guidance from a podiatrist is imperative. This type of doctor can conduct a thorough evaluation to identify the root cause of the discomfort and develop a personalized treatment plan. Custom orthotics may be prescribed as a way to regain comfort and mobility. It is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to manage heel pain.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our doctors of Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Types of Wound Care for Gangrene

Gangrene, the consequence of compromised blood supply to the lower limbs and feet, occurs in three primary forms, which consist of dry, wet, and gas gangrene. Dry gangrene, stemming from arterial blockage, progresses slowly and necessitates vascular intervention for blood flow restoration. This type of gangrene is often seen in patients with arteriosclerosis or diabetes. Wet gangrene is caused by an infected wound that is left untreated. Wound care for gangrene involves surgical debridement to remove dead tissue and antibiotics to combat bacterial proliferation. Gas gangrene, caused by clostridia bacteria, requires aggressive debridement and targeted antibiotics to prevent systemic spread. A podiatrist plays an important role in managing gangrenous wounds in the lower limbs and feet to keep the condition from worsening. If you have ulcerated wounds that have turned gangrenous, it is strongly suggested that you seek prompt assessment by a podiatrist and get immediate treatment to avoid loss of limb.

Wound care is an important part in dealing with diabetes. If you have diabetes and a foot wound or would like more information about wound care for diabetics, consult with one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Wound Care?

Wound care is the practice of taking proper care of a wound. This can range from the smallest to the largest of wounds. While everyone can benefit from proper wound care, it is much more important for diabetics. Diabetics often suffer from poor blood circulation which causes wounds to heal much slower than they would in a non-diabetic.

What Is the Importance of Wound Care?

While it may not seem apparent with small ulcers on the foot, for diabetics, any size ulcer can become infected. Diabetics often also suffer from neuropathy, or nerve loss. This means they might not even feel when they have an ulcer on their foot. If the wound becomes severely infected, amputation may be necessary. Therefore, it is of the upmost importance to properly care for any and all foot wounds.

How to Care for Wounds

The best way to care for foot wounds is to prevent them. For diabetics, this means daily inspections of the feet for any signs of abnormalities or ulcers. It is also recommended to see a podiatrist several times a year for a foot inspection. If you do have an ulcer, run the wound under water to clear dirt from the wound; then apply antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover with a bandage. Bandages should be changed daily and keeping pressure off the wound is smart. It is advised to see a podiatrist, who can keep an eye on it.

Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy causes a variety of symptoms affecting the feet. It typically begins with sensations such as numbness, tingling, or prickling, and progresses to burning, freezing, or shooting pains, often intensified at night. Peripheral neuropathy in the feet may create a sensation similar to wearing an invisible sock. Loss of balance, muscle weakness, and coordination difficulties are also common factors, hindering mobility. Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy can vary, with motor nerve damage resulting in muscle weakness. Sensory nerve damage causes tingling, numbness, or extreme sensitivity to touch. Autonomic nerve involvement can lead to abnormalities in foot temperature, sweating, and other involuntary functions. Polyneuropathy, affecting multiple nerves simultaneously, is common and requires prompt recognition for timely intervention. If you suspect you may be experiencing symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an evaluation and personalized treatment.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our offices located in Agoura Hills, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks Marin St., and Thousand Oaks Haaland Drive, CA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

The Importance of Foot Check-Ups For Older Adults

Regular foot assessments and timely management of foot-related issues in older adults play a huge role in maintaining mobility and reducing the risk of falls, which are major concerns for this age group. The feet can change in structure and function as people age. Especially when paired with conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and circulatory problems, this can significantly impact a person’s ability to walk and perform daily activities safely. By addressing these issues early through routine podiatry care, potential problems can be managed or corrected before they lead to more serious complications and falls. This approach helps older adults both retain their motor performance and independence, as well as reduce their fear of falling. Fear itself can lead to a decrease in physical activity, further diminishing muscle strength and balance, which increases the risk of falls. It is suggested that elderly people with possible foot and aging concerns make regular appointments with a podiatrist, to address any potential problems quickly.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact one of our doctors from Advanced Foot & Ankle Medical Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.
