Kinesio taping, or elastic therapeutic taping, is used to reduce the stress on overused muscles and allow underused muscles to be used. The elasticity of the tape can either limit or encourage certain motions of the body, which is what facilitates the muscles. It is also theorized that the wave pattern on the tape has a raising effect on the skin, increasing circulation to the area and relieving pressure on some pain receptors. As a result, many patients have seen a reduction in swelling, inflammation, and pain.
Kinesio taping has gained a lot of recognition since the tape was distributed to a bunch of Olympic athletes at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Our physical therapists are trained in how to properly tape patients, and would be glad to discuss it as a treatment option for you when you come visit.
